Artemisia as a multi-targeted phytogenic alternative in poultry production: A comprehensive review of the impact on health and production

Abstract:

This review summarizes the diverse effects of various Artemisia species on poultry performance, gut integrity, carcass characteristics, and immunity, as well as their roles as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-coccidial agents. Dietary supplementation with Artemisia species has been shown to improve growth performance, as evidenced by increased weight gain and reduced feed conversion ratio. These benefits are primarily attributed to bioactive compounds that optimize gut health and enhance nutrient absorption. Furthermore, Artemisia species can improve carcass quality and decrease abdominal fat deposition. Their immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties have also been demonstrated, including the upregulation of antioxidant enzymes and mitigation of oxidative stress. The anti-coccidial effects of Artemisia species in poultry are supported by reductions in oocyst shedding, lesion scores, and droppings scores. Additionally, feeding poultry Artemisia species may improve hematologic indices and lipid profiles, indicating better metabolic health. In conclusion, Artemisia species represent a viable and sustainable alternative to antibiotics, growth promoters, and coccidiostats, increasing productivity and enhancing immune response, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status, and overall health in poultry production systems.
